About Virtus

What is Virtus?

Virtus is a research workspace for federal tax professionals. You ask a question, read the original source, and check the evidence behind each cited answer.

Who is Virtus for?

Attorneys, tax professionals and accountants. Role pages describe how tax attorneys, CPA firms, in-house tax teams and sole practitioners use it.

How do I get started?

Sign in with your firm’s account and choose New chat. If you are starting a new workspace, create an account. If you are joining an existing workspace, ask your workspace administrator for an invitation.

Can I upload my clients’ files?

No. The library holds published federal tax sources. Client files are not accepted.

How do I reach a person?

Write to support@virtusrt.com with what you tried and what you expected to see. For a guided walkthrough, book a demo.

Sources and citations

Which sources can I research?

IRS written determinations, the Internal Revenue Code, Treasury regulations, and IRS revenue procedures published in Internal Revenue Bulletin issues since late 2003. The Sources page lists exactly what is searchable today.

What does “searchable” cover?

Searchable means a source’s text is in the Virtus library with its publisher, identity and location, so a search can return it and a citation can point into it. Planned coverage is part of the product plan and is not in the library, so nothing you research depends on it.

Are earlier years covered?

Code sections and Treasury regulations are searchable as they read now. For an earlier year, check the edition and effective date before you rely on the text. The regulations come from the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations, an informational compilation, so the official annual edition and the Federal Register remain the legal text.

Are Tax Court opinions included?

Not yet. Tax Court opinions and orders are part of the product plan and are not in the library today.

How is a citation checked?

Each sentence of an answer carries a numbered marker. Before an answer is shown, the cited passage has to exist in the library’s published record, carry a page or section location, and match the stored source text. A sentence that cannot be tied to a passage is removed.

What does a citation point to?

For a PDF, an exact page. For a Code section or a regulation, the section. A pointer to a whole document with no page or section does not meet the standard, so it is not used as evidence. Opening a citation to a PDF takes you to that page in the publisher’s file.

What if the library has nothing on my question?

Virtus does not guess. It shows “No cited answer” and says why. That describes the library, not the law: it means nothing Virtus can cite answers the question, so try a document number, a Code section or a different phrase.

Accuracy and limits

Can an answer be wrong?

AI summaries and answers are generated text that cite the pages they come from, and they can be wrong. Check the authority type and status in the source details before relying on a document. A search match does not establish legal authority.

What does a resolved citation not establish?

It shows where a sentence came from. It does not establish that the passage supports your position, that the source is current or controlling for your period, or that a scanned page was read perfectly.

How are scanned pages shown?

Pages transcribed from a scan are labeled as transcriptions, not official text. Download the original to keep the published document.

Does Virtus change the original source?

No. The publisher’s file is kept as issued. Your highlights go on a working copy.

What is outside the library?

Records available only by request and older records not published electronically; commercial commentary, treatises, editorial headnotes and newsletters; a full citator tracking every later document that follows or criticizes a source; state and international tax law, or broad federal-court coverage; and client files and private document uploads.

Memos and drafting

What is a memo in Virtus?

A memo is drafted from cited answers. Research additions arrive as changes to accept or reject, and their citations come with them.

Where are memos kept?

Projects keep related chats, sources and memos together, and they are private to you. Matters groups firm memos.

Which plans include memos?

Both Business and Enterprise include memos drafted from cited answers.

Pricing and billing

What is a licensed user?

One person with access to your workspace. Business is $500 per licensed user per month, billed monthly, for one to 15 users. Your firm manages invitations and licenses.

Do I buy credits?

No. The plan is priced by licensed user, not by a wallet of prompt credits. AI features are subject to plan usage limits. Your firm owns the questions, notes, highlights, and generated output it adds to the workspace.

What if we have more than 15 people?

Enterprise. It covers any number of users and adds company sign-in, access, audit and retention controls, and dedicated support. Contact us and we will quote your firm.

Which plans offer company sign-in?

Business, as a $199 per workspace per month add-on, and Enterprise, where it is included. Staff sign in with your firm’s existing work accounts, and automatic staff access gives colleagues on your firm’s email domain access without a separate invitation. Setup is required.

How is Enterprise priced?

By quote, based on users, setup, support, and privacy requirements. Contact sales to discuss your firm.

Can you support our security review?

Enterprise security review is available by agreement, alongside defined audit, access, and retention controls. Virtus does not currently have a SOC 2 Type I or Type II attestation; we will not present a provider’s certification as our own.

What does Business include?

Everything in the library and the workspace: keyword and citation search, original PDFs, cited AI answers and summaries, projects, memos, highlights and annotated downloads, and priority support with Slack access.

How are add-ons priced?

Company sign-in, including automatic staff access, is $199 per workspace per month. A custom domain is quoted.

What support can our team expect?

Business includes priority support and Slack support. Enterprise adds a dedicated Slack channel and agreed response times.

What does the zero-data retention option cover?

Only the data and uses specified in your Enterprise agreement. Account, billing, audit, saved-work, and official source records are not all discarded.

Accounts and security

How do I sign in?

Sign in with your firm’s account. Firms that add company sign-in let staff use their existing work accounts.

How is my sign-in protected?

Your sign-in is kept in one signed cookie that page scripts cannot read and that travels only over HTTPS. It ends after 30 minutes without activity and never lasts more than 12 hours. Sign-in and account requests are limited to 20 a minute from each network address.

Can another firm see my research?

No. Another workspace cannot see your workspace’s searches, saved work, or document text. Before results are returned, each request is checked against your workspace membership and your role’s permissions.

Is my work used to train AI?

No. We do not train AI on your work. We do not use your searches, saved work, or document text to train or fine-tune shared AI. The logs of an AI request from your workspace do not keep your question or the answer text.

Does Virtus track visitors?

We count site visits without cookies and without storing your IP address, and not at all when your browser sends Global Privacy Control. Our pages also run monitoring of page speed and errors. It sets no cookie, keeps a random session code in your browser’s local storage, and does not run when your browser sends Global Privacy Control. We do not use advertising or targeting cookies.

Where do I report a security issue?

Email security@virtusrt.com with what you found and how to reproduce it. Please do not access other people’s data while testing.
